Explore Your Imaginative Side
Sew Creative is a site to explore our imaginative side. First, we will look at the world around us and experiment with color and design. We will also find ways to enhance the old or create something new. In addition, together we will look at the fabric art of the past and build our own unique designs for the future. I hope others will join me on this creative adventure, and keep a journal of their exploration. Since art in all forms is personal, it is fun to learn and share ideas with one another.
Just Start Collecting
Here are some things to consider to help get the creative juices flowing. Think about:
-
- favorite colors.
- memories and pictures that come to mind.
- favorite textures and designs.
- photographs or magazines pictures and illustrations.
- a collection of meaningful objects
- a symbol that reminds you of an important event or memory.
- the patterns and diversity you observe in nature.
- keeping a journal.
Then after collecting your ideas, a theme may emerge, but even if something does not immediately stand out, keep looking.
I enjoy quilts built on symbolic memories:
Keep Examples
Quilts are personal. The quilt on the left was designed on a symbolic memory that is important to the young mother having who was having her first child. However, the quilt on the right incorporated a compilation of pictures done by all the family members to welcome a new baby. Each picture was transferred to a block, cut out, and sewn together. Just like the cardinal quilt, it is a way to remember and share personal memories with their family in the future.
Put It All Together
Now, make a connection with your thoughts and materials. Next, take a picture of your collection and write your ideas in a journal or a notebook. Journals can be purchased or made by hand, and personally, I like homemade creations because they seem to embody the creator’s personality. Here is an example of a journal I made for this project. So let’s get busy and see what comes together, but do not be too critical, just enjoy the process.
